Wine and champagne cork snowman ornament

This little snowman will look adorable on your tree.  Take it a step further and attach him to a hostess gift wine bottle or package.  I’ve used small pieces of wire with the glue for extra stability. These little snowmen (or women) will stand or you can attach an eye screw to the top for easy hanging.  Make one, two or a whole bunch. Quick, easy and very cute!

Note:  When I'm cutting my cork, I usually work on a sheet or two of heavy corrugated cardboard or recycled foam core board.  This protects your work surface.

You will need:

Wine cork—there are black wine corks; if you have one of those you can eliminate painting the cork black.

Champagne cork

Paper twisted floral wire

Dimensional fabric paint in black and orange and if desired,  optional clear sparkle

Black acrylic paint

Small paintbrush

20-gauge wire

Wire cutters

Needle nosed pliers

Small awl or nail

Hot glue gun and glue sticks or thick tacky craft glue

Ruler

X-acto or craft knife

Heavy corrugated cardboard (to protect your work surface while cutting the cork)

220 sand paper

Compass

Black fun foam scrap

4” Red ribbon—the kind you can fray the ends

Small eye screws

1.     Measure and cut a wine cork in half.  Sand the cut edges with fine sandpaper till smooth. One will be the head and the other the top of the hat.  Use the awl or nail to make a hole in one of the pieces of wine cork.  Using the wire cutters cut a ½” piece and insert into the hole you made.  Use the protruding wire to hold the wine cork while you paint it all black. (Top hat)  If you have used a black cork you don’t need to paint it.

2.     Make a hole in the bottom of the other wine cork piece with the awl or nail.  Cut an insert another ½” piece of wire.  Make a hole in the bulbous top of the champagne cork and dabbing a bit of hot glue on the wire end of the head, insert in the top of the champagne cork.  (See photo)

3.     Use a compass to make a 1” diameter circle from the black fun foam and cut out.

4.     Cut a ½” piece of wire and insert in the bottom of the black painted cork piece and stick it through the center of the fun foam circle.  (Top hat made)

5.     To put the top hat on the head, use the awl or nail to make a hole in the top of the head, add a bit of glue and insert on the head.

6.     Cut two 1 ½” pieces of paper wrapped floral wire with wire cutters. Pull down the paper to expose a bit of the wire.  Make a hole with the nail or awl on each side of the champagne cork body, add some glue to the to the exposed wire and insert in the holes.  Use needle nosed pliers to bend however you would like.

7.     Attach the ribbon around the neck with some glue.

8.     Make dots for the eyes, mouth, and buttons with the black dimensional paint.  Make a nose with the orange dimensional paint.  Let the paint dry. For an extra touch add some sparkle dimensional paint on the hat and arms. (optional) Attach an eye screw to the top of the hat for hanging or you can eliminate this step if you just want your snowmen to stand.

Frozen Ollie the snowman ornament tutorial

You can make this cute little Frozen Ollie ornament with only two champagne corks and a few supplies you probably already have on hand. Add some paint and . You may confuse this little snow fellow with his better known relative, Olaf, but Ollie is his own (Snow) man.   Easy and fun!  Hang it on the tree or use him for a package decoration for a Frozen fan!

You will need:

Two champagne corks

White spray paint (You can brush on acrylic paint but spray paint is quicker and easier)

Black acrylic paint

Black, white and orange dimensional fabric paint

Small paintbrush

Small awl or nail

20 gauge black wire

Wire cutters

Needle nosed pliers

Two wiggle eyes

Brown chenille stems

Ruler

Toothpick or wood pick

Tacky craft glue

1.     Make a hole in the center bottom of the narrow end of each cork with the nail or awl.  Cut a piece of toothpick about ½” long.  Add some tacky glue to one end of the toothpick piece and using a twisting motion insert into one of the corks.  Add some more glue on the protruding toothpick and attach the two corks together.

2.     Paint both corks with either white spray paint or brush on acrylic paint(work in a well ventilated area or outside) and let dry.

3.     Attach two wiggle eyes with tacky glue.  (See photo)  Using acrylic paint add some eyebrows.  Use a pencil to draw a mouth with the front tooth for a painting guide.  Use the small paintbrush to fill in the drawn area with black acrylic paint leaving the tooth area white. Add a second coat if needed. Let dry.

4.     Add some buttons with the black dimensional fabric paint and a nose with the orange dimensional paint.  Use white dimensional paint to fill the tooth area. (Optional) Let all the paint dry.

5.     Cut four pieces of brown chenille stem 2 inches long.  Twist one 2-inch piece on the end of another 2-inch piece to make the fingers.  Repeat with the other two pieces of chenille stem.

6.     Use the awl to make a hole on each side of the body.  Using a twisting motion add a dab of glue on the end of the chenille arm and insert into the body.  Repeat for the other arm.  Bend however you would like.

7.     To finish make three holes in the top of the head.  Use the wire cutter to cut three 2-inch pieces of 20 gauge black wire.  Add some glue to the ends and insert into the top of the head where you made the holes.  Use the needle nosed pliers to curl.  (See photo)

Polymer clay rosebud earrings tutorial

These earrings are quick and easy and inexpensive to create using minimal supplies.  They make wonderful personalized gifts since you can make these roses in any color you desire.  Christmas will soon be here and what better gift them one created especially for the recipient.

You will need:

Small amount of polymer clay in desired color

Clay needle tool

Post earring backs

E600 glue

Gloss finish (optional)

Small paintbrush

Home oven set at 275 degrees

Cookie sheet covered with aluminum foil

1.     You can make your earrings as small or as large as you desire depending upon how large your clay balls are.  Roll eight pieces of clay into balls.  Make them all the same size.  It is easiest to work on the end of a clay needle tool attaching your roses to the end.

2.     To make an earring use four of the clay balls.  Take one of the clay balls and flatten with your fingers.  Roll this onto the needle tool, pressing at the base.   This is center of your rose.  (See photo)

3.     Flatten a second ball with your fingers and attach to the base of the rose. This is the first petal.  Curl the ends down.  (See photo)  Continue flattening and attaching petals with the other two balls of clay like you did with the first one pressing at the base to secure them.  Remove the rose from the needle tool and set aside.  Repeat steps 2-3 for a second earring.

4.     When you have finished making your earrings you will need to bake them. Set them on a cookie sheet covered in aluminum foil and bake in a 275 degree oven for 20 minutes.  Remove from the oven and let cool.

5.     Using E6000 glue attach each earring to an earring post.  Let dry completely.

6.     After your earrings have dried, brush on some clear gloss on the petals and let dry.  (optional)
