Lorax-like and cuddly bear pencil puppets

Looking for an easy craft you can make with your kids?  Do you want it to be something that will encourage imaginative play and—reading?  How about making a quick Lorax-like pencil puppet based on the Dr. Suess book? But why stop at just one, you can easily create a little cuddly bear pencil puppet too!

For Lorax-like puppet you will need:

One large orange (approx. 2 1/2”) pom pom

Medium yellow pom pom

Tiny pink pom pom

Two wiggle eyes
*********************
For cuddly bear puppet you will need:

One large black (or tan) pom pom

Three small tan pom poms

One tiny black pom pom

Two small wiggle eyes
*************************
For both puppets you will need:

Scissors

Tacky craft glue

Pencil

To make Lorax-like puppet:

1.     Cut the yellow pom pom in half with the scissors.  It will come apart into a pile of fluff.  Grab a small piece of the yellow fluff and twist it between your fingers.  (Think of someone twisting a handlebar mustache)  Keep twisting until the piece measures about 1-½ inches in length making it as thick as you like.

2.     Set the large orange pompom on the pencil top and twist to form an indentation.  Apply some tacky glue in the indentation and insert the pencil top.  Hold for a few moments and let the glue dry.

3.     Add a bead of glue on the length of twisted yellow fluff (mustache) and attach to the front of the orange pom pom in an arc.

4.     Put a dab of glue right above the mustache in the center and attach the tiny pink pom pom.  Glue on the wiggle eyes. (see photo) Grab a pinch of the yellow fluff and add a dab of glue over each eye and attach.

To make the bear puppet:

Follow the directions for Lorax-like puppet to attach the black pom pom to pencil. Add some tacky glue on the center of the black pom and attach a small tan pom pom. (snout)  Add a dab of glue on the center of this tan pom pom and attach the tiny black pom pom (nose)  Add some more glue to top on each side and glue two tan pom poms (ears)  Glue on two tiny wiggle eyes and you are done!
