How to easily make an adorable snowman ornament

snowman ornament

It's July, and July is the best time to start making your Christmas ornaments.  This snowman ornament is made from a recycled K-cup so it's green as well as adorable. The days are warm and lazy and the kids are out of school so there is plenty of time to create!  Get a head start on Christmas with this sweet recycled k-cup snowman ornament before school starts back and you are swamped with PTA meetings, soccer games and more.

Here at Make it easy crafts, it's Christmas in July with the easy k-cup snowman ornament.

Materials:

Two used K-cups, one black, and one white. (Filters removed and washed.)

Black Felt

Black and orange dimensional fabric paint

12” of 1/8” ribbon

Tacky craft glue

Compass

Ruler

Nail or something to puncture a hole in the tops of the K-cups

Round paper punch

White colored pencil to mark on dark felt

Scissors

Large eye darning needle (optional)

Pony Bead

1.     Insert the white pencil in the compass and make a 1 ½” diameter circle on the black felt.  In the same starting point make another circle inside the first one at a 1” diameter.  Cut out the first circle and then cut out the center circle. You will have a felt ring.  (See photo)

2.     Slide the felt ring on the black K-cup stopping at the rim.  Snowman’s hat made. Set aside.

3.     Turn the white K-cup upside down and make a hole in the center with the nail.  Repeat for the black K-Cup with the felt rim.

4.     Place the top of the black K-cup down on the black felt and trace around with the white pencil.  Cut out.  Make a mark on the felt where the center hole is and make a hole with the paper punch.  Line up the felt with the hole on the top of the hat and glue down with some tacky glue.  Let dry.  Trim any excess felt with the scissors.

5.     Thread a pony bead on the ribbon, center so that it is in the middle with six inches on each end.  Insert both ends of the ribbon through the hole in the white K-Cup.  The pony bead will secure it to the inside. You may use a large eye darning needle here to get through the hole easier although I had no trouble doing it with just the ribbon.  Tie a knot in the ribbon one inch from the top of the white K-Cup, and then continue to thread it through the top of the black K-cup.  The knot separates both of the K-Cups so they hang independently. (See photos)

6.     Tie a knot in the top of the final end of the ribbon to hang the ornament.

7.     Tilt the hat so you can use the black and orange dimensional fabric paints to make a face on the snowman.  (See photo) If you want, you may add some glitter glue on the top of the hat for extra pizzazz. Let the paint and glitter dry.  When hanging the hat will sit straight with the snowman dangling under.

Recycled K-cup graduation cap

Do you have an upcoming graduation party on the horizon?  If so this cute little recycled K-cup graduation caps that fit on a soda bottle will dress up your table in style.  You can make these in any color to match the graduating class colors, or simply make a generic black one.  If the color of your cap is the color of the K-cup you can even skip the painting step like I did or simply spray paint them with a color of your choice.

This is a quick and easy craft and you use something that you normally toss in the trash.  You can even write the date and the name of your graduate on the outside with a sharpie marker so they have a lasting memory of the big day.  These little graduation caps looks so cute on a soda bottle!

Supplies:

K-cup for each graduation cap
Corrugated cardboard
Mat board or heavy card paper
Embroidery floss in desired color
Cabochon or rhinestone, button for the top of the cap
Tape
Ruler
Scissors
Pencil
Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
Optional:  For personalized colored cap, spray paint in desired color, sharpie marker for coloring the sides of the brim

Instructions:

1.     If you are painting your cap to match your particular school, spray the K-cup and mat board or card paper in your choice of color.  Work in a well -ventilated area.  Let the paint dry completely. My K-cup was black so I used it as is. White graduation caps are also popular and many K-cups are white.

2.     To make the tassel cut a piece of corrugated cardboard 2” x 1 ½”.

3.     Using embroidery floss cut a 3” piece and lay it across the top of the cardboard piece horizontally.  (You will tie your tassel with this)

4.     Wrap some embroidery floss around the cardboard piece over the tying piece vertically about 12 times.  Tie the top thread into a knot and slide off the cardboard.  Cut the bottom loops to make your tassel.

5.     Cut another thread and tie it about ¼” from the knot to complete your tassel.  Snip the ends evenly.

6.     Use a small piece of tape to hold the tassel down while you braid the top threads. (Hanging cord)  Set aside.

7.     Cut a 2 ½” x 2 ½” piece of mat board or heavy card paper.  I used black mat board and colored the white edges with a sharpie marker.

8.     Using the hot glue gun attach the top cord to the center of the cap brim.  Glue on a cabochon, rhinestone or button to match.

9.     Use the hot glue gun to attach the brim to the bottom of the K-cup.  You will need the top to place on a soda bottle.

Recycled K-Cup Leprechaun hat for St Patrick's Day

Since Christmas the top craft tutorial that everyone is asking me for is anything made with a recycled K-cup, and as always I aim to please. All it takes is an empty K-cup to make this cute little leprechaun hat to decorate your table or other small area.  They are easy enough to make a bunch and you can even use them as party favors filled with small candies.

You will need:

K-cup washed and filter removed

Green glitter

Shamrock foam sticker

Tacky glue

Small paintbrush

Heavy cardboard or mat board (I have scraps of mat board lying around and that is what I used)

Scrap of gold ribbon or cord

Compass with pencil

1.    Draw a circle 1 ½” circle with the compass on the cardboard and cut out.

2.     Place the K-cup top side down and trace around in the center of the cut out circle.  Cut this circle out inside the line so it will be a bit smaller than the diameter of the K-cup.

3.     Place the ring around the cup and push down to the bottom edge to form a brim.

4.     Spread some tacky glue on the entire K-cup and cover with the green glitter.  Let dry.  Cover the brim with glue and sprinkle glitter on it as well.  Let dry.  Turn over and repeat the glue and glitter on the inside of the brim.  Let dry.

5.     Cut a 6-inch piece of gold cord or ribbon and glue around the hat. (see photo)

6.     When the ribbon has dried, attach a Shamrock foam sticker over the seam where the ribbon meets.  Glue a small jewel or miniature coin in the center of the shamrock.

While I am of Greek descent, I married an Irishman so my now name is Donnelly and you can't get more Irish than that.
